Dear Resident:
We have been advised by the PA Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP),
Radon Division that our township has at least one previously recorded radon test result
greater than100 pCi/L or 25 times the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guideline
of 4 pCi/L. This is how the PA DEP selects certain areas for increased public awareness
and test kit distribution.
We hope that you are aware of the fact that Pennsylvania has some of the most severe
radon problems in the country. Radon is a very serious health concern causing many lung
cancer deaths in the Commonwealth each year. Most of these lung cancer deaths are
preventable. To prevent most lung cancers, people could stop smoking and test and fix
their homes, schools and workplaces for radon. Radon testing is easy and relatively
inexpensive; in fact, through a program with the American Lung Association test kits can
be obtained for free while supplies last.
As the winter approaches, our homes are getting into the “heating season.” This is an
ideal time for residents to perform radon testing. During this time of the year as a normal
result of the cooler temperatures homes and other buildings are under closed-building
conditions, which is a requirement for radon testing.
To receive your free radon test kit through the ALA go to: www.lungradonkits.org. Begin
by selecting Pennsylvania and entering your zip code. Test kits are available only while
supplies last. Each kit includes instructions, return postage, laboratory analysis and
reporting of results.
After you receive your test kit and subsequent test results you can then contact the PA
DEP, Radon Division in Harrisburg at 800 237-2366 or 717 783-3594 to have any
questions answered.
Sincerely,
PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
